October 20, 2024 – Merced Police Department officials report that they have been awarded a $63,654 grant from the California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to battle alcohol-related crime. This is not the first time that the MPD has received funding from ABC to conduct operations related to alcohol. The grant is one of many awarded in California to local law enforcement agencies.

Funds allow the agencies to increase protection for youth and to shut down problem locations that have contributed to an increase in crime. The grants strengthen local law enforcement efforts by combining the efforts of local police officers and ABC agents. ABC agents have expertise in alcoholic beverage laws and can help communities reduce alcohol-related problems.

"This is another tool that we have to achieve our goals of reducing crime and improving the quality of life for all citizens of Merced,” said Chief of Police Steven Stanfield.

The program will put bad operators out of business, arrest adults providing alcohol to minors, help keep alcohol away from minors, and bring penalties such as fines, suspensions or revocations against businesses and individuals that violate the law(s) regarding alcohol and minors.

Operations to be conducted include minor decoy operations, shoulder tap operations, retail inspections, and licensee training.

ABC is a part of the California Department of the Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency.
