October 29, 2024 – Grass Valley, CA – Nevada County Sheriff's Office officials report that an investigation into an alleged assault ended with the arrests of Tyler Smith Cummings, 25, of Grass Valley, and Thomas Antoine Vieira, 55, of Grass Valley. Cummings and Vieira were both arrested on October 24 in the 18000 block of N. Cherry Creek Rd. in Grass Valley where they reside. Cummings was booked on 243(D)PC (battery with serious bodily injury) and Vieira on 243(D)PC (battery with serious bodily injury) and 203PC (mayhem).
An investigation into Cummings and Vieira began on October 3, 2024, after a male victim sought medical treatment for severe facial injuries reportedly sustained on September 3, 2024, at the Cherry Creek residence. The victim advised investigators that fear of retaliation had led to the original delay in reporting.
Through the course of the investigation, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO)’s Major Crimes Unit obtained Ramey arrest warrants and search warrants for both subjects. As both subjects were known to have past hostile interactions with law enforcement, coupled with their known criminal history, it was determined the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail (SED), Critical Incident Negotiations Teams (CINT) and Patrol teams were needed to safely execute the warrants at the property and apprehend Cummings and Vieira. NCSO also utilized a Tactical Dispatch team, as assisted by Nevada County Sheriff's Search & Rescue (NCSSAR), which embedded two highly skilled 911 dispatchers at the Incident Command with NCSSAR. Dispatchers oversaw private radio communication and remained fully dedicated to the operation throughout the duration. Additionally, NCSO partnered with Placer County Sheriff's Office, who was instrumental in use of drone technology, which was used to clear the residence first before deputies made entry.
The extensive planning by NCSO’s detectives, SED and CINT resulted in the safe arrests of Cummings and Vieira, who were both booked into Wayne Brown Correctional Facility without incident.
This case remains under investigation. Anyone with information related to Cummings’ and Vieira’s arrests are urged to call NCSO’s Major Crimes Unit at (530) 265-1471.
