DA Gascón announced that he supports the ask for clemency from Gov. Gavin Newsom in the immediate release of the Menendez brothers.
October 31, 2024 – LOS ANGELES, CA – Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón on Wednesday announced that he supports the Menendez brothers’ request for clemency from Governor Gavin Newsom.
“I strongly support clemency for Erik and Lyle Menendez, who are currently serving sentences of life without possibility of parole. They have respectively served 34 years and have continued their educations and worked to create new programs to support the rehabilitation of fellow inmates,” said District Attorney Gascón.
The request for clemency was submitted October 28 by Erik and Lyle Menendez’ defense team, and the district attorney’s office has sent letters of support to Gov. Newsom.
The matter will now be reviewed by Gov. Newsom for consideration.
On October 24, District Attorney George Gascón announced his decision to recommend resentencing for the Menendez brothers. LADA filed that motion in court that same day. A court date is scheduled for December 11 in Dept. S of the Van Nuys Courthouse.
