Chelsea Stillwell's transitional kindergarten/kindergarten class at Sierra Foothill Charter School had a special visitor on Wednesday, February 17, 2016. Leo the Lion accompanied dental hygienist Burney Stephens on her visit to the classroom to teach students about good dental health. Stillwell tied the visit into many curricular areas including math and science. Students went home with new tooth brushes. Mariposa County First 5 provided this opportunity to SFCS as well as all preschools and child care centers, and community events as part of its Children's Dental Health Grant.
SFCS DV0Stephens began her visit by introducing students to her special puppet, Leo the Lion, and talking to them about some dental care basics.
SFCS DV1With the help of Leo the Lion, Stephens showed students the proper way to brush their teeth so they make sure not to miss any places.
SFCS DV2In preparation, the day before the visit, students took a survey of how many teeth they have lost. Students colored the the number of teeth they lost onto these special smiles.
SFCS DV3During math, students, including Tavin Vaziralli shown here, graphed a variety of dental pictures.
SFCS DV4
During science, the class discussed foods that are good for your teeth and food that is bad for your teeth. Students worked in groups and made photo collages of healthy food and food that harms your teeth.

Students thoroughly enjoyed this educational visit.
SFCS First 5 for providing this wonderful learning opportunity!
