November 14, 2024 – Calaveras County Sheriff's Office officials report that on Sunday, November 10th, 2024, at 8:06 p.m., officers from the Calaveras County Sheriff Detention Facility found an unresponsive incarcerated male possibly suffering from a medical event in a housing unit cell. Custodial staff quickly initiated life-saving efforts as Paramedics responded and assumed life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, the individual was pronounced deceased.
Investigators from the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office and District Attorney's Office are conducting a thorough investigation in accordance with departmental protocol to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this incident. The Sheriff’s Office is coordinating notifications with State governing agencies that oversee correctional facilities. There were no signs of foul play. Deputies assisted the Coroner's Office with notifying the next of kin. The individual has been identified as Benjamin Nava, a 43-year-old Valley Springs resident.
