Senators Successfully Pushed The President To Include The New Hospital In His 2024 Budget Request

Legislative Approval Will Officially Begin Construction Process of New Reno Veterans Hospital

November 18, 2024 - WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) announced that bipartisan jacky rosen senator nevadalegislation they helped introduce to officially authorize the construction of a new veterans hospital in Reno has passed the Senate and will now head to the President’s desk. The bipartisan Fiscal Year 2024 Veterans Affairs Major Medical Facility Authorization Act allows the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to officially change the scope of the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System project from a previously-approved renovation of the existing facility, to the construction of a new veterans medical center. This was the next step needed in the process to begin construction of a new VA hospital, and it follows Senator Rosen’s successful push with Senator Cortez Masto to include the hospital in the President’s 2024 Budget Request.

Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV)

“I pushed the Biden Administration to construct a new VA hospital in Reno because veterans living all across Northern Nevada deserve to have access to world-class health care in a state-of-the-art facility,” said Senator Rosen. “I worked across the aisle to secure the necessary Congressional approval for this project, and I look forward to the President signing this bipartisan bill into law so we can finally begin the process of constructing the new hospital that our veterans deserve.”

“Northern Nevada veterans are past-due for a new, state-of-the-art veterans hospital, and this funding will kickstart the construction and planning process,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “This is an exciting first step, and I won’t stop until this project is completed and our brave men and women who have served our country have the facility they deserve.”

Senators Rosen and Cortez Masto have been working across the aisle to support Nevada’s veterans. They helped secure historic infrastructure investments in the bipartisan PACT Act, which expands VA health care eligibility to all veterans who were exposed to toxins and other hazards during their service. In the 2024 bipartisan government funding package, Senators Rosen and Cortez Masto also secured funding to increase access to affordable housing for veterans, continue building Nevada’s first national veterans cemetery in Elko, and increase funding for veteran’s access to telehealth.
