Sierra Foothill Charter School board member and volunteer Caroline Wenger Korn recently applied for a grant to the Yosemite area Audubon Society for the following books adding up to about $240: 10 copies of Sierra Birds: a Hikers' Guide; 4 copies of Field Guide to the Sierra Nevada, and 1 copy of Drawing Birds. Her grant application was successful.
Audubon Society member Karen Amstutz, brought the books and presented them to a group of third through fifth grade students who happened to be doing an Audubon observation with Ms. Korn at the time. The children were excited about the books and quickly looked up birds they've seen at school and at their homes.
Teena Starchman's third and fourth grade class have already used the books for bird drawing lessons.
Fifth and sixth grade teacher Erika Miranda plans to use them with her students as well. Caroline Wenger Korn sits with a group of third through fifth grade students enjoying the books received from the Yosemite Audubon Society. "There's the red tailed hawk we just saw," said one student. "And the acorn woodpecker that made all those holes in the oak branch." One boy was especially delighted to find that "a big brown bird that was just sitting on a fence post looking at me!" was a hawk he was able to look up on his own.
