November 25, 2024 – Placer County Sheriff's Office officials report that two men are missing after being swept away in the American River.
On Saturday, November 23rd just before 9:00 p.m. we received a call stating that two men had been swept away in the American River at approximately 7:00 p.m. and had not resurfaced. We have learned that a group of three men went to the area to fish. Two of the men, both 20-years old, got into the water. One of them was swept away, the second man tried to help, but was also pulled in by the current.
We quickly responded to the area of Oregon Bar. Falcon 30 conducted an overhead search in the dark. The dive team responded, but due to the darkness and swift river conditions it was not safe for them to go rafting. They conducted a search from the shore, with no results.
We currently have 18 searchers and two K9 teams in the field conducting search and rescue operations. Teams are covering both sides of the river, to locate any potentially downed or missing persons who may have self-rescued. Our dive team will be on the water shortly. Two drones are on standby, awaiting improved visibility as fog is currently limiting their use.
