Services Classes Can Enrich Your Life

March 25, 2016 - Merced College’s Community Services offers a wide array of life-long learning and leisure activity classes beginning in April 2016.

merced college community services logoCommunity Services provides area residents with opportunities for education, enrichment, and adventure. The classes are non-credit and range from belly dance and golf for all ages, to exercise and art classes. A wide variety of excursions are also offered throughout the year, including trips to sporting events, theater shows, cultural functions, educational venues, and recreational activities. 

Aikido

Through the understanding of the fundamentals of emotional and physical conflicts and by implementing basic Aikido techniques including basic body movement, synthesis of breathing, physical and mental applications, the student will gain an overall understanding of the philosophy of Aikido and how it relates to both self-defense and conflict resolution.  Sensei Ron Duran holds the rank of Shodan and has over a decade of experience in Aikido.  In addition, he has been a student of Ninkage Ryu Aikijutsu for the past eight years.

An Evening with the Artist

Cezanne, Renoir, and Van Gogh—Would you like to get Renoir? Consider spending an evening with the Impressionists. You will learn about the artist and create a pastel master copy of one of their famous works. In each class you will be immersed in the life of an artist and create an inspiring piece of art to take home.

Dates: Thursdays, April 7-21, 6-7:30 p.m.

Badminton

Learn to play badminton and understand the basic rules that apply to the game. Come have fun, all levels are welcome!

Belly Dance (Level 1 & II)

Learn the basic movements of this ancient and natural dance form.  Appropriate for all age groups and body shapes, this unique dance and fitness program enhances posture, grace and self-confidence.  Belly Dancing is a great low-impact way to burn calories, increase spinal strength and flexibility, tighten hips and thighs, and re-shape the entire abdominal region.

Business Plan Design (English OR Spanish)

Come learn how to turn your business ideas into a solid plan worthy of financing and long-term success. Discover what needs to go into a successful business plan with strategic focus on an executive summary, company description, products and services, marketing plan, operational plan, management and organization, personal financial statement, startup expenses and capitalization, and a financial plan. Hear from financial experts on how to break down the process of obtaining a business loan and explore import or export of products to assist with your business goals.

Carmel by the Sea

Carmel has consistently been voted one of the top tourist and visitor destinations in the country and after visiting, and for California residents we know why. Within the quaint European style village, visitors can relax, unwind and enjoy the peaceful ambiance. With art galleries, antique shops, boutiques, and intimate cafes and restaurants, Carmel promises visitors hours of discovery. Enjoy a no-host lunch as well as the beach and shops. The day includes admission to the Carmel Mission’s grounds, Basilica, and Museum.

Container Herb Gardening

Learn about growing herbs in containers for easy access to wonderful flavors for cooking! We will explore the world of herbs, how to grow them from seed and plants, as wll as to use them in cooking, drinks and other uses. Students will also plant a herb bowl with their choice of herbs as a take home project! Dress comfortably as we will be doing hands on projects.

Crazy for Cupcakes

Cupcakes are everywhere!  Different flavors, styles, designs, and shapes!  Participants will learn to decorate an assortment of eye-catching cupcakes using both buttercream icing and fondant.  The best part is you can take them home to share with family and friends!  Materials required: Please bring 10 - 12 plain cupcakes to class.

Dancing for Birth

Come have fun and learn how expectant moms can move to music before, during, and after the birthing process, using specific dance movements to help get more comfortable during pregnancy, encourage babies into an optimal position for birth, and promote healing in the post-partum period. So tie a scarf around your hips, and spend an hour of fun bonding with your baby, as we dance and talk about birthing.  Post-partum moms and newborns welcome!  Check it out at www.dancingforbirth.com.

Golf for All Ages

Bogie, par, fore!  Whether you are a beginner or advanced player, your game will improve.  This golf lesson course will cover full swing, short game, basic rules, and general golf etiquette.  Gary Olson played on the PGA tour for 10 years, participated in 11 national championships as well as 2 major championships, and has been teaching golf for 48 years.  Bring your own clubs or borrow one of ours.

Intermediate & Advanced Microsoft Access 2013

Take your data management to the next level! This course is for the intermediate and advanced database user. This course will show you how to utilize the full power of Microsoft Access 2013. In this 3-day practical and project-oriented workshop series, you will learn how to use Microsoft Access 2013 to create and customize tables. You will have the opportunity to make your database more user-friendly smart lists and other sophisticated controls. Learn how to start automating routine tasks with labor-saving macros. You will also receive tips and techniques for optimizing your database, including ways to build crosstab and summarize queries so you can access information quickly and easily as well as outer table joins that can make you queries more effective and reports using conditional formatting to highlight key data points, and explore Visual Basic, a powerful programming language that allows you to automate simple and complex tasks. Finally, you will put the finishing touches on your database as you build a navigation form to make it easy for your users to find what they need.

Western Line Dance

No need for a partner in this active, fun-filled class where you can meet new friends while learning the latest western line dances along with the oldies but goodies.

Western Partner Dance

Don’t dress up – just come, socialize, and have fun while learning to dance! In this lively and interactive class, you’ll learn the basic steps to dances such as the Two Step, Ten Step, Cotton Eye Joe, Schottische, and the well-known Swing.

World Dance

Learn easy folk dances from around the world.  No experience or partners required.  Dances are mostly line and circle patterns.   All ages are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult.  Come meet new folks, stimulate your mind and toes alike, and get some good low aerobic exercise while relieving stress and dancing to music from a variety of cultures worldwide--Europe, Greece, the Middle East, and beyond.  You will gain an appreciation for how other folks come together traditionally to celebrate and have a lot of fun too!

Dates: Wednesdays, April 13-May 18, 7-8:30 p.m.
