Madera Unified to Implement Phone-free Policy at Schools
January 14, 2025 – MADERA, CA – Madera Unified School District officials announce the implementation of a 
new phone-free policy.
As part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing student engagement and creating a focused learning environment, all Madera Unified School District (MUSD) middle schools and one alternative education school will implement a new phone-free policy starting (today) on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
Under this initiative, students will be required to place their phones inside Yondr pouches, where they will remain securely until the end of the school day. In an emergency, students can access their phones to contact their parents or guardians.
This policy aligns with California Assembly Bill 3216, also known as the Phone-Free School Act, which Governor Gavin Newsom signed. The bill emphasizes the importance of minimizing distractions in all state classrooms by July 2026.
Beginning in August 2025, the phone-free policy will be applied across all MUSD high schools.
The phone-free guideline will be implemented in the following schools:
- Martin Luther King Middle School
- Desmond Middle School
- Thomas Jefferson Middle School
- Madera Technical Exploration Center
- Ripperdan Community Day School
