February 7, 2025 – Modesto, CA – Modesto Police Department officials report that justice was served on Wednesday as a jury found Jesse James Brooks guilty on multiple charges stemming from the August 14, 2021, shooting that critically injured Modesto Police Investigator Michael Rokaitis. Investigator Rokaitis was struck by gunfire while executing a search warrant, ultimately losing his leg. Investigators Davies and Billing, along with other officers, were also fired upon during the incident.
Brooks was convicted on the following charges and is facing three life sentences:
- Three counts of premeditated attempted homicide of a peace officer
- Three counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm on a peace officer
- Felon in possession of a firearm
- Felon in possession of ammunition
“This conviction is a testament to the dedication of our officers and the relentless pursuit of justice by the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office,” said Modesto Police Chief Brandon Gillespie. “Investigator Rokaitis has shown incredible resilience in the face of adversity, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring the safety of our officers and our community.”
