caltrans clearing highway 108 sonora pass april 2016
Caltrans' District 10 maintenance crews have started their annual spring clearing of State Route 108 over Sonora Pass in Tuolumne County. As you can see from Monday's photo, it was a bright sunny day in the Sierra as workers began removing snow, rocks, shrubs and other debris from the road.

April 5, 2016 - Tuolumne County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) was scheduled to begin its spring clearing of State Route 108 (SR-108) over Sonora Pass on Monday, removing snow, clearing debris, inspecting the roadway and making the appropriate improvements to ensure the public’s safety.

The department intends to open the closure gates at Eagle Meadows and Kennedy Meadows after reaching those points on SR-108.

Caltrans’ goal is to open Sonora Pass to Kennedy Meadows Road in time for the beginning of trout season, Saturday, April 30, 2016. Caltrans asks that no pedestrians, bicyclists or other vehicles go beyond the closure gates while maintenance crews are conducting snow removal/maintenance operations.

Caltrans extends its best wishes for safe summer traveling to those who enjoy the recreational opportunities this part of California has to offer.

This work is scheduled to begin as listed, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and/ or materials and construction issues.

Winter weather and road conditions can change rapidly. Motorists should expect the worst conditions and be prepared when traveling in areas subject to hazardous conditions. All vehicles, including those with four-wheel drive or snow tires should, additionally, carry chains when traveling during snowy weather.

For the latest in highway information please call our Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623).
