February 13, 2025 – Merced, CA – Merced Police Department officials report that they are seeking assistance from the public in solving two separate animal cruelty cases within the city limits of Merced. In both incidents, dogs were shot—one with a pellet rifle and the other with a firearm. Thankfully, both dogs are on the road to recovery and are in the process of being rehabilitated and adopted through the support of New Beginnings Animal Rescue.

The two incidents, which are believed to be unrelated, occurred several days apart and on opposite ends of the city. The dogs were detained by Animal Control Officers and transported to Valley Animal Hospital for treatment. After their evaluations, it was discovered that the dogs had sustained injuries from gunshot and pellet rifle wounds.

Additionally, the Merced Police Department was made aware of a black German Shepherd found with a pellet rifle wound. However, this dog was located in the county area of Merced and is not connected to the city incidents.

At this time, our agency has not received any specific reports of animals being shot within the city limits, and we are asking for the public’s help to provide any information that could aid in the investigation.

"We are concerned about these acts of cruelty and need the community's help to hold those responsible accountable," said Captain Daniel Dabney, of the Merced Police Department.
