High-Country Health Food and Cafe in Mariposa California

February 15, 2025 – CAL FIRE officials show how traditional tribal fire practices benefit, restore, and strengthen the land.

For millennia, California Indigenous communities have used cultural burning to manage forests, reduce wildfire risk, and restore ecosystems. CAL FIRE is proud to support and collaborate with tribal partners in reviving these traditional fire practices.

This work reduces hazardous fuels, restores healthy landscapes and biodiversity, and strengthens cultural traditions and tribal stewardship.

Through partnerships, training, and grants, CAL FIRE is working alongside Indigenous fire practitioners to integrate cultural burning with modern wildfire prevention strategies. Together, we are building a more fire-resilient California.
