AB 2012 authorizes the board of supervisors in specific counties to authorize the county sheriff or county director of corrections to create a Jail Industry Authority. The Jail Industry Authority’s main objective would be to transform county jails into productive work places by encouraging inmates to learn skills, gain work ethic, continue good behavior and reduce idleness while providing benefits to the inmate, facility, victims and the community. “The Jail Industry Authority will not only benefit the inmates by providing them with vocational skills, but it will help our communities,” Assembly Member Bigelow said. “This legislation is critical as these types of programs provide a proven reduction in recidivism rates.”
