April 15, 2016 - Sacramento –The Franchise Tax Board (FTB) reminds taxpayers they can take three extra days to file both their federal and state income tax returns this year. The deadline is extended to Monday, April 18, 2016, irs logobecause Washington, D.C. will celebrate Emancipation Day on Friday, April 15.

Since the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is honoring this holiday, the FTB is following suit.

“The extended deadline provides a few extra days for Californians to file their taxes and take advantage of available credits such as California’s new Earned Income Tax Credit,” said State Controller Betty T. Yee, who serves as chair of the FTB.

Help is available for taxpayers unable to file by April 18. California offers taxpayers an automatic six-month extension to file their tax return until October 15, 2016. However, the additional six months are only an extension to file a tax return. If taxpayers owe taxes this year, those payments must be made by April 18 to avoid interest and penalties. Online payment options are available at ftb.ca.gov and click the link for “All Payment Options.”

So far, the FTB has received about 11.5 million state returns. About six million returns have yet to be filed.
