“My title refers to the fact that I’ve had more than 50 hours of training to be a Master Gardener through the UC Cooperative Extension and passed an exam in 2013,” said Petryna, who works as a business writing consultant specializing in grant writing and administration.
Petryna said her “motivation” to become a Master Gardener was to “gain and share knowledge about home gardening with people who share my appreciation of the natural world.” According to Petryna, her talk with include photos of native and drought-tolerant plants and landscapes.
The Master Gardener concept originated in 1973 in Washington State and was introduced in California in 1979. Madera County has participated in the program since 1989. Growing interest in home gardening and an increase in the volume of research-based information available prompted a group of university extension advisors to seek a better way to disseminate information to the public and thus the Master Gardener Program was born.
