March 31, 2025 – Yosemite National Park officials offer rainy-day indoor alternatives at the park when visiting on a rainy day.
When it rains in Yosemite Valley, hiking amongst the clouds as water cascades down towering granite walls is an experience like no other. But what about those who prefer to stay dry? Exploring Yosemite Village's historic buildings, museums, and education centers is a great way to connect to the park. Here are our top rainy-day indoor alternatives:
Yosemite Valley Welcome Center
Just arrived in Yosemite but not sure where to start? This center is for you! Here, you can talk to rangers about trip planning, join a ranger program, or peruse the Yosemite Conservancy bookstore. For families with kids, pick up a Junior Ranger book to complete during your visit (and get a Junior Ranger badge as a bonus!)
Yosemite Exploration Center and Theater
In this interactive exhibit hall, learn how Yosemite's landscape formed, how people and wildlife have interacted with it, and how your national park continues to evolve. Venture into the Yosemite Theater to watch a free 23-minute film covering the park's splendor.
The Ansel Adams Gallery
For art lovers, a visit to this gallery is a must. Here, you can view the work of the legendary Ansel Adams, whose black and white photos captured the essence of Yosemite. Also showcased are works by local contemporary artists and fine artists. The gallery hosts events, classes, and art tours through the park on certain days.
Yosemite Museum
Delve into the history and culture of Yosemite's American Indian tribes. This museum's permanent exhibit is dedicated to Yosemite's original people, with examples of local basketry and other objects. Cultural demonstrators showcase complex basket weaving, beadwork, knapping, and traditional games.
The Ahwahnee
Explore the rustic architecture of this famous hotel and National Historic Landmark. Even if you aren't staying, this hotel's interior's woven tapestries and stained-glass windows make it the perfect backdrop to enjoy a meal and watch the rain. Join the hour-long Historic Ahwahnee Hotel Tour through Yosemite Hospitality for an extra dose of history.
