TPD Responds to Firearm Discovery at Dutcher Middle School
April 15, 2025 – Turlock Police Department officials report that on Monday morning at approximately 10:30 a.m., a Turlock Unified School District maintenance worker discovered a pile consisting of two blankets and a jacket near a fence line on the Dutcher Middle School campus. The items were found in a maintenance area where electrical equipment is housed, near a neighboring apartment complex. While clearing the space, a firearm within the pile discharged. Fortunately, no one was injured.
The incident was immediately reported, and several Turlock Police Department officers arrived at the campus within minutes to secure the area and begin the investigation. A School Resource Officer also responded shortly after to assist.
Two handguns and a jacket were located and recovered. All items were collected and booked into evidence. At this time, it is unclear how long the firearms had been there or how they ended up in that location. Staff are currently reviewing surveillance footage and working to determine a timeline.
Out of an abundance of caution, a Turlock Police officer remained on campus for the rest of the school day.
We understand how concerning this situation is for parents, students, and staff. Please know that we are working closely with the Turlock Unified School District and remain committed to ensuring the safety of our school campuses.
