TRAFFIC ADVISORY
Rest Area, Lane & Ramp Closures
Interstate 5 and State Routes 33, 59 & 140
April 19, 2025 – MERCED COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform various closures on Interstate 5 (I-5), and State Route 33 (SR-33), SR-59, & SR-140 for maintenance and construction operations. Work is scheduled to occur as follows:
INTERSTATE 5
- Full closure of the John C. Erreca Rest Areas on northbound and southbound I-5 beginning Monday, April 4, 2022, through May 31, 2025.
o ALTERNATE LOCATIONS: Motorists are advised to use the Coalinga-Avenal Rest Area (Fresno/Kings County line).
STATE ROUTE 33
- One-way traffic control from State Route 140 South to the Merced/Stanislaus County Line for crack and seal operations on Friday, April 25, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
STATE ROUTE 59
- Long-term lane/shoulder closures northbound and southbound 16th Street Bridge for bridge work beginning Monday, February 10 at 8:00 p.m. through Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 11:00 p.m.
- One-way traffic control from Bear Creek Drive to Merced Town Railroad Crossing for utility work beginning Tuesday, April 22, through Wednesday, April 23, 2025, from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
STATE ROUTE 140
- Long-term one-way traffic control at the Los Banos Creek for bridge work beginning Tuesday, December 31, at 3:00 p.m. through Friday, October 3, 2025, at 3:00 p.m.
Motorists should expect 5-10 minute delays and use alternate routes whenever possible. This work is scheduled to take place as listed, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment, and/or construction related issues.
