May 3, 2025 – Fresno Police Department officials report that on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at approximately 3:45 p.m., officers from the Central Policing District responded to the intersection of Channing Way and Michigan Avenue, regarding a nine-round ShotSpotter activation. Upon arrival, officers began canvassing the area and located several 9mm casing in the intersection. Officers on scene obtained a witness statement and surveillance video of a vehicle leaving the scene at a high rate of speed. 

Skywatch was overhead and observed a vehicle matching the description leaving the area. Skywatch began updating assisting officers regarding the location of the vehicle which led officers to a residence where several subjects were seen getting out of the vehicle and going into the home. Everyone inside cooperated and exited the residence. Upon obtaining the subjects statements, officers determined these subjects were victims of the shooting. Further investigation revealed video surveillance footage of the suspect vehicle. 

On April 23, 2025, Steven Gonzales was stopped by a Motor unit for having registration expired for three years. He was cited for the violation and his vehicle was impounded. Body-worn camera video of the traffic stop, along with the impounded vehicle, assisted detectives in identifying Gonzales as the suspect from the shooting the night prior. Gonzales is on active probation for robbery.

On May 1, 2025, detectives arrested Gonzales for the April 22, 2025, shooting and he was booked into the Fresno County Jail for Penal Codes 245(a)(2) x3 counts, 246 x2, 29800(a)(1), 30305(a)(1), 25400(a)(1), 26100(c).
