Mr. Moore is a volunteer fire fighter for the Mariposa County Fire Department – Catheys Valley Company 23. He regularly teaches fire safety to all SFCS students. Mr. Moore drives a fire engine on campus for students to view. He gives presentations about the equipment through captivating stories and uses the equipment to demonstrate how to put out fires. He is present on campus during monthly fire drills.
Mr. Moore also has been involved with the Mariposa County Fire Department’s Fired Up for Reading contest. In past years, students spent a month reading as many books as possible. Based on teacher criteria, one winner per grade level was chosen. Winning students received a ride to school and back in the fire engine driven by Mr. Moore, lights and all. It was a popular event for students.
Mr. Moore also cuts the grass on our campus field weekly making it more safe for students to play on, and he trims trees and bushes around the school to keep our campus fire safe. He’s been doing these tasks for four straight years without asking for any recognition whatsoever. He often pays for the gas used by the mower.
Mr. Moore is also a parent of a student at school and he is very involved in school functions. He has an ever present, welcoming smile and can be counted on as a very dedicated parent.
For these reasons, Jerry Moore is SFCS’s Hands on Hero! Congratulations, Jerry, for recognition well deserved.
