K-9 Tonka, Final Log-Off

May 20, 2025 – Madera County Sheriff's Office officials announce that after eight years of loyal service, K-9 Tonka had his final log-off on May 17th. Throughout his career, Tonka served with distinction alongside three dedicated handlers: Corporal Grijalva for nearly two years, Corporal Matt Autry for approximately two and a half years, and most recently, Deputy Steven Corner, who has been his partner since 2022.

During his time with Deputy Corner, Tonka became the SWAT K-9 for the Madera County SWAT Team—a role he held for almost three years. Together, they trained extensively in both patrol functions and narcotics detection. Tonka played a vital role in the apprehension of wanted individuals and the discovery of hidden narcotics. His contributions to patrol and SWAT operations were invaluable.

Beyond his tactical duties, Tonka was a beloved presence in the community. He regularly attended events throughout the county, delighting the public with his friendly demeanor and relishing in every pet and treat offered. Around the Sheriff's Office and the Oakhurst Substation, Tonka was known for making his rounds, greeting staff, and spreading joy wherever he went.

Now, Tonka will enjoy a well-earned retirement with the Corner family. He’ll spend his days relaxing in the sun, playing with Deputy Corner’s children—whom he considers his brothers—and joining the family on outdoor adventures. Tonka leaves behind a legacy of service, loyalty, and love.

On behalf of the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, we would like to thank the Madera County Sheriff’s Foundation for their continued support of the K-9 program. The Madera County Sheriff’s Foundation was instrumental in reestablishing the K-9 unit in 2016, and their ongoing support has allowed for the acquisition of specialized equipment for the K-9’s and the handlers.

Sheriff Tyson Pogue reflects, “K9 Tonka served the citizens of Madera County with unwavering loyalty and determination. His work helped protect our deputies and our communities, and his legacy will not be forgotten. We’re grateful for his years of dedicated service.”
