May 24, 2025 - Merced County officials are actively investigating a case involving multiple patrons who became ill after consuming food products at Carniceria Los Cerritos restaurant, located at 235 W. 12th St. in Merced. Preliminary findings indicate that food items were contaminated with a controlled substance of unknown origin.

Upon being notified, the Merced County Division of Environmental Health took immediate action to close the establishment and initiated a comprehensive investigation. The restaurant will remain closed pending the outcome of the investigation and any required cleanup.

At this time, we are aware of up to 10 individuals who required medical attention after consuming contaminated food. Due to federal privacy laws, no further information about the individuals can be released.

If you have any leftover food or products purchased from Carniceria Los Cerritos, do not consume them. We strongly advise customers to discard any such items immediately.

Merced County is working closely with local law enforcement and public safety personnel to determine the source and scope of the contamination.
