May 26, 2025 – Kern County Sheriff's Office officials report that on the afternoon of May 23, 2025, China Lake Mountain Rescue Group (CLMRG) responded to a report of stranded hikers on a steep rocky section below the summit of Owens Peak.  Their location was determined through cell phone communication with the hikers.

CLMRG members, joined by a Bureau of Land Management Ranger who had been monitoring radio dispatch communications, started hiking into the hikers’ location.  At approximately 1:30 a.m., the Search and Rescue members had safely rescued the hikers.
