Arson, Code Violations, & Abatement Action
May 30, 2025 – Merced County Sheriff’s Office officials report that in response to ongoing complaints, the Merced County Sheriff’s Code Enforcement Team took action at a property on the 6900 block of Myrtle Avenue in Winton, where excessive solid waste and multiple code violations were discovered.
Despite repeated outreach and education, the property owner failed to comply, prompting legal action. A Notice of Violation and an abatement order were issued, and a court hearing was scheduled.
Before the hearing could take place, a fire broke out at the property on May 18th. Deputies and Cal Fire responded to find numerous vehicles and waste fully engulfed. During the response, the homeowner interfered with the first responders and was arrested.
Following a court-approved abatement warrant, cleanup began on May 27th. The two-day effort resulted in the removal of significant waste and seven abandoned vehicles, with support from CHP’s AVA Program.
Code Enforcement will continue monitoring the location to ensure compliance.
Anyone with information about the fire is urged to contact our Investigations Bureau at (209) 385-7472.
