Deputies Respond to Shots Fired and Report of Arson, West Point
June 5, 2025 – Calaveras County Sheriff's Office officials report that on June 2, 2025, at approximately 7:30 P.M., deputies responded to the 1000 block of Bald Mountain Road in West Point regarding reports of a suspect brandishing a firearm, threatening to shoot the victim, and firing shots at the victim’s parked vehicle. While responding, the victim reported that the suspect had discharged additional rounds and had started a vegetation/vehicle fire. Upon arrival, deputies conducted interviews with witnesses, which led to the identification of Robert Ray Gurion, age 39, of West Point, as the primary suspect.
As deputies arrived, they established a command post to coordinate containment of the suspect and fire suppression efforts. Due to initial information indicating that the suspect was armed, shooting, and in a residence near the fire, there was concern about deploying fire resources. Responding deputies came from all parts of Calaveras County and began securing a perimeter, as well as evacuating individuals in the vicinity of both the fire and suspect Gurion’s location.
While establishing a perimeter, a deputy observed the suspect’s vehicle backing down a driveway before driving away from a residence. A deputy conducted a traffic stop of suspect Gurion and took him into custody without incident. Once the threat posed by the suspect was mitigated, fire personnel were able to extinguish the fire and keep it from spreading to nearby properties. Deputies also went to the residence where the suspect, Gurion, was last observed to ensure no one was injured. While conducting a sweep of the residence, deputies located multiple firearms and ammunition. Detectives were notified and responded to the residence to continue the investigation. They were able to gather additional statements and evidence that supported a Judge from the Calaveras County Superior Court to grant a search warrant for the suspect’s residence.
During the service of the search warrant, detectives located a total of 13 firearms, including two fully automatic weapons, 11 high-capacity magazines, and ballistic body armor. Upon examination of the firearms, one was found to be reported stolen from West Point in July 2024. The detectives also documented damage to four vehicles resulting from the fire caused by suspect, Gurion. Suspect Gurion was transported to the Calaveras County Jail, where he was charged with 31 felonies and three misdemeanors.
