June 13, 2025 – Kern County Sheriff's Office officials report that on April 21, 2025, at approximately 4:00 p.m., California City Police Department Officers were dispatched to a report an assault with a firearm in the area of Corwin Street and Lime Avenue in California City, CA.

At approximately 4:09 p.m., a Cal City PD officer located the suspect in the 8700 block of Hickory Avenue and an officer involved shooting occurred. The officer sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. An additional Cal City PD officer then responded to the scene of the officer involved shooting and rendered medical aid to the officer who was shot.

The officers later determined the identity of the suspect and that she was a female juvenile. The juvenile was apprehended in possession of a firearm, additional live ammunition in her pocket, and a knife in her waistband.

She was shot during the incident and transported to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.

The juvenile was arrested for

- Two counts of attempted murder

- Assault with a firearm on a peace officer

- Shooting at an occupied vehicle

- Attempted murder on a public official

- Carrying a loaded firearm in public

- Minor in possession of ammunition

- Carrying a concealed knife

- Resisting/ obstructing a peace officer

Officer Kelakios was taken to the hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound where a bullet was recovered from his leg.

Kern County Sheriff's Office Homicide detectives responded to the scene to assume the investigation. Officer Michael Kelakios of California City Police Department was placed on critical incident leave pending the completion of the investigation.

Pursuant to a Memorandum of Understanding with the California City Police Department, the Kern County Sheriff's Office has been designated as the lead investigating agency for any Officer Involved Shootings by any members of the California City Police Department.

On June 5, 2025, the California City Police Department convened an Incident Review Board examining the use of force in this incident. The use of force in this case was determined to be within policy.
