June 14, 2025 – Placer County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on Tuesday, June 10th, the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Unit, along with allied agency assistance from Placer SIU, arrested Yunming Fan, 36 of San Gabriel, CA, related to a scam involving an elderly victim in Auburn. The victim had been contacted online days ago, and was told that she owed thousands of dollars due to a computer error related to an online payment app. She was told that to satisfy a debt she now owed, she had to withdraw cash and provide it to a courier who would arrive at her house. After providing a small amount of money, the victim realized it was a scam and contacted PCSO. Detectives then supervised communications with a fraud suspect over the phone, who now demanded tens of thousands in additional money.
On Tuesday, June 10th, Fan approached the residence in Auburn in an attempt to pick up the remaining money. After leaving, Fan was contacted behind the wheel of the pictured Honda Accord and taken into custody for charges of conspiracy and theft by false pretenses, which were charged as felonies. During this investigation, detectives learned that Fan or other related suspects may have recently been in the area conducting other cash pickup scams. Fan is pictured in case another victim recognizes him as a fraud suspect in their own incident, along with his silver Honda Accord sedan.
Our office takes a firm stance towards protecting our senior citizens and will continue working towards the prevention and investigation of scams and fraud.
