HONOR THE AMERICAN FLAG JUNE 14, 2016

Legion Butterfly 2016On Tuesday, June 14th, American Legion Post 567 will host a Flag Retirement Ceremony in honor of Flag Day, which falls within National Flag Week.  The ceremony will start at 6 PM and be held at Steve’s Sportsman Café at 3441 Woodland Dr. in Mariposa.  This is a time when Americans should reflect on the foundations of our nation. The flag of the United States represents freedom and has been an enduring symbol of the country’s ideals since its early days.  Americans also remember their loyalty to the nation, reaffirm their belief in liberty and justice, and observe the nation’s unity. On this day, the U.S. Army celebrates its Birthday, as June 14th was the day the Nations Leaders established the Continental Army to defend this great country.

There is a strict protocol for retiring “The Flag”, and American Legion Post 567 will honor the flags being retired, so if you have a flag that requires proper disposal, please bring it.  The American Legion will be handing out Flag Magnets and Patriotic pencils and will have U.S. made Flag sets available for a donation, with all proceeds going to our fund for a Service Dog for a local veteran.

We must not forget what our Flag stands for, and as Jack Womer, a WWII Army Ranger and Paratrooper said in his book, he fears, as do many Veteran’s, that “Americans will forget how hard we have fought and the sacrifices we’ve made to preserve our freedom.  That people tend to take the accomplishments of previous generations for granted and don’t take the time to learn.”  This is truer in today’s fast paced electronic world, so spend some time on Tuesday evening June 14th with your family to remember and pay tribute, as Mariposa is one community that does not forget.  Once again, mark your calendar and we’ll see you at Steve’s Sportsman’s Café.  Arrive early for a good meal or enjoy one after and bring a chair as we pay tribute to what our flag stands for.
