June 18, 2025 - Madera County Sheriff’s Office officials say thanks to strong teamwork between Madera County Sheriff’s Deputies and Cal Fire Madera-Mariposa-Merced, an arson suspect is in custody following Monday’s 40-acre fire near Raymond Rd & Ave 28 ¼.

Hilario Vargas Martinez, 34, a transient, was seen lighting multiple fires along the Fresno River before fleeing on foot. He was captured after a mile-long search and now faces 6 felony charges.  His bail has been set at $250,000.

“Protecting our community is our top priority. Fires like these put lives and resources at risk,” said Sheriff Tyson Pogue.
