June 26, 2025 – Merced Police Department officials announce the passing of retired Merced Police Detective Don Varney. 

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of retired Merced Police Detective Don Varney.

Don joined the Merced Police Department in January 1981 and dedicated 28 years of his life to serving our city, retiring as a Detective in July 2009. Even after retirement, Don continued to serve with passion working part-time on cold case investigations for another five years.

Don’s commitment to justice, his tireless work ethic, and his genuine kindness left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. He was a respected detective and a valued colleague.

We are grateful for his many years of service and will never forget the legacy he leaves behind. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this hard time. Detective Varney, you will be missed!
