Golf carts, low-speed vehicles (LSVs), and off-highway vehicles (OHVs) may seem harmless, but they are still motor vehicles under the law. That means all traffic laws apply, including DUI statutes.
Here’s what you need to know about these vehicles and the law around Bass Lake:
What’s Legal and What’s Not
Golf Carts (CVC §345):
- Must be designed for 2 people max, not exceed 15 mph, and weigh under 1,300 lbs.
- Only allowed on private property—not on public roads around Bass Lake.
- Not street-legal, even on 25 or 35 mph roads, unless the area is part of a designated Golf Cart Transportation Plan (Bass Lake is not).
Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs) (CVC §385.5):
- Electric vehicles capable of 20–25 mph.
- Must be DMV-registered, insured, and meet federal safety standards (seatbelts, windshield, mirrors, lights).
- Street-legal only on roads posted ≤35 mph.
Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs) (CVC §38000 et seq.):
- Includes dirt bikes, ATVs, side-by-sides, and similar vehicles.
- Not allowed on public roads unless specifically designated and signed for OHV use.
- Must be trailered to and from authorized OHV areas.
At no time is it legal for an unlicensed driver to operate a golf cart, LSV or OHV on a public road. Not only is it dangerous, it’s illegal and could result in fines and vehicle impoundment.
