August 18, 2025 - SACRAMENTO - Senator Eloise Gómez Reyes (D-Colton) issued the following statement in response to violent attacks by United States Customs and Border Protection (CPB) agents on San Bernardino residents over the weekend. Agents responded to requests for identification and warrants by damaging private property and firing weapons, and then called for the presence of San Bernardino Police under SB 54 with alleged claims of officer injury:
“I am outraged by the violent attack that took place on San Bernardino community members this weekend, and demand that CPB and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) provide evidence supporting claims of assault on a federal agent. Some public statements made by federal officials regarding this incident have been refuted by on-scene video and community testimony. Honesty and transparency will be critical to understanding if state and local solutions might prevent similar incidents from occurring again in the future. I have been in close communication with San Bernardino’s Mayor and City Manager, as well as several community-based organizations dedicated to immigrant rights. As new information becomes available, my team and I will continue to provide updates. In the meantime, a full list of free resources for our immigrants in the Inland Empire is available at www.senate.ca.gov/29.”
