September 2, 2025 - Stanislaus County Sheriff's Departmen officials report on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at approximately 2:00 p.m., deputies were alerted to a felony vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Highway 99 through Turlock. The suspect vehicle had been observed in Merced County traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour before entering Stanislaus County, posing a significant risk to public safety.

A Stanislaus County deputy spotted the vehicle continuing at a high rate of speed while entering the freeway. A traffic stop was attempted, but the driver failed to yield to the deputy’s emergency lights and siren. The suspect continued northbound on Highway 99 for approximately 3.8 miles before colliding with an unoccupied vehicle parked on the freeway shoulder.

The driver, Cory Chance, a 33-year-old resident of Everett, Washington, then fled on foot but was quickly located by the Sheriff’s Office unmanned aerial system (UAS), hiding beneath a parked truck. The UAS deputy coordinated with ground units from the California Highway Patrol, Ceres Police Department, and Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office to safely apprehend the suspect.

The driver was taken into custody and booked on the following charges: Three felony counts of evading a peace officer, One misdemeanor count of fleeing the scene of a crash.
