Taft Assault with a Deadly Weapon Arrest
September 17, 2025 – Kern County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on September 7, 2025, Kern County Sheriff’s Office deputies assigned to the Taft Substation were dispatched to the 200 block of E Cedar Street in Taft for an assault with a deadly weapon call for service.
During the investigation, MELVIN MORRISON (67) was identified as the suspect, and a Ramey warrant was issued. MORRISON was arrested and a search warrant was executed. Deputies seized five firearms including the firearm believed to be used in the initial crime. MORRISON was booked into the Lerdo jail for PC 245(a)(2); assault with a deadly weapon/firearm, PC 417.6(a); Exhibit firearm/deadly weapon w/serious injury intent, and PC 422; criminal threats.
