October 9, 2025 – CAL FIRE officials offer advice on buying, charging, and recycling lithium-ion batteries the safe way.

Lithium-ion batteries make life easier—but when used the wrong way, they can spark dangerous fires.

That’s why CAL FIRE Office of the State Fire Marshal is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for this year’s Fire Prevention Week: “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”

This year’s focus: buying, charging, and recycling lithium-ion batteries the safe way.

“Lithium-ion batteries are powerful, convenient, and they’re just about everywhere,” said Chief Daniel Berlant, California State Fire Marshal. “This year’s campaign helps people understand the importance of using these batteries correctly to prevent home fires and to follow the Buy, Charge, Recycle Safely approach.”
