sierra national forest fire lookout

October 11, 2025 - Sierra National Forest Officials say effective Saturday,  October 11, 2025, the Sierra National Forest is lifting temporary fire restrictions placed into effect by Forest Order 05-15-00-25-07 on June 27, 2025.

Criteria for enacting and the lifting of fire restrictions through forest orders are based on National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS) indices, fuel moisture conditions, current forecasted climatology data, and the amount and occurrence of human-caused ignitions.  Fire restriction orders are utilized to provide for public safety and protect natural resources.  Current conditions across the Sierra National Forest including Energy Release Components (ERC) and Burning Indexes (BI) are not meeting the thresholds to continue with fire restrictions as outlined in the current Sierra National Forest Fire Restriction and Closure plan.  The totality of these factors results in lower probabilities and potential for large fire growth and suggest that any new ignitions would not burn with extreme intensity and behavior.

With temporary fire restrictions being lifted, please remember to follow all guidance and regulations found on your required campfire permit, keeping fires to 2 feet in length by 2 feet in width by 2 feet high in size.  Information on obtaining a campfire permit can be found at https://www.ca.gov/departments/147/services/1239/ on CA.gov.

For awareness, Forest Order 05-15-00-24-09 is still in effect and limits building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire above specific elevations within certain areas of the Ansel Adams Wilderness and John Muir Wilderness.  Please reference Forest Order 05-15-00-24-09 Wilderness Campfire Restrictions with exhibits for a complete list of restrictions within these Wilderness areas.
