Incarcerated Women Graduate Sewing Program

November 23, 2025 – Fresno County Sheriff's Office officials report on Fresno County Jail Sewing Program.

Established in 2022, the Fresno County Jail Sewing Program aims to train currently incarcerated individuals on foundational sewing techniques and standard machines. Using practice-based coaching, this program strives to foster perseverance, precision, and planning to highlight the importance of quality through repetition.

Members of the program, known as The Quilting Crew, acquire a sense of responsibility in their efforts, leading to their own creative flair, building a sense of self-confidence. Through their acquired skillsets, participants of the Sewing Program will procure lifelong skills for their journey into the community and employment after release. With a practice-based coaching style, trust and camaraderie can be nurtured within the groups, allowing for a space to enjoy the process of practicing fundamental sewing skills.

We would like to recognize Laundry Supervisor Melinda Lujan and Correctional Officer Cheryl Blair for their dedication and hard work to keep this valuable program going.

Congratulations to the five ladies for graduating from the Fresno County Jail Sewing Program.
