November 24, 2025 - Sierra National Forest officials report the Basin Creek bridge on Black Rock Road in Balch Camp, California, was repaired safely and efficiently through close collaboration between Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and the Sierra National Forest (SNF). PG&E, contractors, and SNF teams worked seven days a week to reopen the vital crossing as soon as possible. The successful restoration of the Basin Creek Bridge ensures access for Blackrock Campground and the surrounding area, which is known to be a critical access route for various types of recreation on the SNF.
The bridge was severely damaged during the Garnet Fire, with nearly all timber decking destroyed requiring immediate assessment to determine if the steel and concrete structures were still safe for use. Engineers and bridge specialists conducted needed testing, and detailed inspections revealed no structural damage to the steel components, nor had the steel been weakened by fire. A concrete abutment however, was damaged by a falling rock, and has since been repaired. SNF is thankful for its cooperators and grateful for its local community partnerships, making it possible to quickly restore critical infrastructure at the Basin Creek Bridge.
