November 25, 2025 – CAL FIRE officials issue a safety reminder on using space heaters.
Space heaters are a leading cause of home heating fires. Always turn off and unplug portable heaters before leaving the room or going to bed. Nearly half of all home heating fire deaths happen overnight while people are sleeping, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
As the weather cools down, keep safety in mind when heating your home.
- Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heating equipment.
- Give space heaters space as they need room to work safely.
- Always turn off portable heaters before leaving the room or going to bed.
A little caution goes a long way in preventing home heating fires this season.
