DNA technology offers another lead in the Cold Case of Juanita Francisco 15 years later

November 30, 2025 – Kern County Sheriff’s Office officials have released a new cold case video in the unsolved 2010 murder KCSO cold case Juanita Franciscoof Juanita Francisco, a cherished member of our community and the heart behind the former La Especial bakery, now known as Juanita’s Bakery.

Juanita was more than a baker. She was known for her kindness, generosity, and warm spirit that welcomed everyone who walked through her doors. Her bakery was a place of joy, where lasting memories were made and shared.

Just two days before Thanksgiving, on November 23, 2010, Juanita was tragically murdered while working alone. Her death devastated her family and left a deep wound in the community that has yet to heal. Fifteen years later, her children and loved ones are still waiting for justice.

Early in the investigation, DNA evidence was recovered at the scene, but no match could be made at the time. Recently, Detective Ashley Sanchez took on the case and is determined to bring closure to Juanita’s family. Inspired by recent breakthroughs in forensic genealogy, Detective Sanchez has partnered with Othram, a private lab that works with law enforcement to identify suspects through advanced DNA technology.

Othram not only helps identify suspects but also assists in identifying unidentified victims (Jane and John Doe’s) by giving names back to those who have been lost. This means that when individuals choose to share their DNA, they may be helping solve crimes and bring closure to families of missing persons.

Othram uses genetic genealogy testing and relies on public donations to fund their work. This cutting-edge technology could be the key to identifying Juanita’s killer and finally bringing peace to her children, who had their mother stolen from their lives far too soon.

The newly released video shares Juanita’s story, the impact of her loss, and the renewed efforts to solve this case. The Kern County Sheriff’s Office encourages the public to watch, share, and support the investigation by spreading awareness.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Kern County Sheriff’s Office at (661) 861-3110 or Kern Secret Witness at (661) 322-4040.
