December 26, 2025 - TUOLUMNE COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has issued the official winter seasonal closure of State Route 108 (Sonora Pass) as of 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 26, 2025.
The recent storm cycle, and accumulation of snow, make the seasonal closure necessary for the safety of motorists and Caltrans crews. Weather and subsequent road conditions are among the determining factors in the decision to issue an official seasonal closure of the highway.
Once Sonora Pass is closed for winter, the road will not be reopened until conditions warrant. Each year, Caltrans District 10 and 9 maintenance crews work diligently to clear debris, remove snow, and make repairs so the highway can reopen safely to motorists.
Sonora Pass is closed eastbound at the California State Parks OHV SNO-Park, and westbound at the Marine Corps Training Facility. Caltrans has performed snow removal operations at the SNO-Park parking lot to allow for winter recreation activities. Caltrans reminds motorists to purchase SNO-Park parking permits in advance, and for more information visit the State Parks OHV webpage.
Caltrans Long Barn maintenance crews encountered approximately 10 inches of new snow with the recent storm and are asking motorists to drive with caution, do not pass snowplows unless instructed by the driver, and please move over when approaching Caltrans snow removal equipment on the highway.
Caltrans also reminds motorists to #KnowBeforeYouGo by checking QuickMaps on your mobile device or visit quickmap.dot.ca.gov for real-time winter highway conditions
