Crash on SR-145, West of SR-41, Claimed the Life of a Passenger the Following Day

January 6, 2026 – Madera CHP officials report that on Sunday, January 4, 2026, just before 10:30 p.m., CHP Madera officers responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash, on State Route 145, west of State Route 41.

A preliminary investigation indicates the following:

A 22-year-old woman from Madera, CA, was driving a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, westbound on SR-145, west of SR-41. The driver of the Jetta pulled over to the right shoulder with the intent to make a U-turn and proceed eastbound. A 62-year-old man from Madera, CA, was driving a 2022 Volkswagen Taos, westbound on SR-145, approaching the rear of the Jetta. The 22-year-old did not see the Taos approaching and attempted to make a U-turn, directly in the path of the Taos. As a result, the left front of the Jetta collided with the right front of the Taos. Both vehicles sustained major damage, and all parties involved were transported to local hospitals with moderate to major injuries. All parties were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

On January 5, 2026, our office was notified that a 77-year-old female passenger in the Taos succumbed to her injuries on Monday. This crash is still under investigation. Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected to be a factor.

Making a U-turn may seem convenient but doing it illegally or without enough space can lead to serious crashes/injuries. Always obey posted signs, check for oncoming traffic, and ensure it’s safe and legal before turning. When in doubt, don’t make the U-turn.
