January 12, 2026 – Merced CHP officials report that earlier this week, Officer Mason responded to a solo vehicle crash on State Route 99 northbound, south of Campus Parkway. The driver stated they struck a bump, lost control, and the vehicle left the roadway before colliding with the center divide wire rope safety fence.

That wire rope barrier did exactly what it was designed to do. It prevented the vehicle from crossing into opposing lanes of traffic and helped reduce the risk of a more serious collision.

Road conditions, speed, and vehicle control all play a role in safe travel. Even small changes in the roadway can have big consequences if drivers are not prepared.

Slow down, stay alert, and always drive within conditions so you can maintain control and keep yourself and others safe.
