January 12, 2026 – Merced CHP officials report that Officer Carrillo recently arrested a 20-year-old driver for driving under the influence after failing to stop at a posted stop sign. Open containers of alcohol were also found inside the vehicle. One traffic violation can reveal a much bigger risk.
In California, the legal drinking age is 21 and the state enforces a zero-tolerance policy for drivers under 21. Any measurable amount of alcohol while driving is illegal, and impaired driving at any age puts everyone on the roadway at risk.
What began as a simple traffic violation quickly became a serious safety issue with lasting consequences.
If alcohol is involved, plan a safe ride before getting behind the wheel. Responsible choices save lives.
How do you think impaired driving impacts families and communities beyond the driver?
