Putting the Blue Envelope Program into Practice

January 19, 2026 – Placer County Sheriff’s Office officials report that deputies recently responded to a call from PCSO blueparents whose adult daughter, who is partially non-verbal and lives with schizophrenia, had run from home after an argument. Deputies immediately began area checks and soon located her, ensuring she was safely reunited with her family.

During the interaction, the family was introduced to our Blue Envelope Program, which helps deputies recognize and better support neurodiverse individuals or those with developmental or cognitive conditions during calls for service. They were given a Blue Envelope packet and expressed deep appreciation for the compassion and understanding shown by our team.

The Blue Envelope Program provides visible tools such as a blue envelope, lanyard, wristband, or seat belt cover that can alert law enforcement that someone may need extra patience or a different communication approach. The program is voluntary, free, and designed to make interactions safer and more positive for everyone involved.

Together with our community partners, we’re proud to continue expanding this effort across Placer County.
