February 18, 2026 – Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on February 9, 2026, at about 1:03 a.m., deputies responded to the 2900 block of stanislaus county sheriffs office logoFarrar Ave. in Modesto for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, a 53-year-old White male adult was discovered, suffering from a gunshot wound. Deputies and emergency medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures; however, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit (MCU) responded to the scene and took over the investigation. Investigators were provided with information, that led to the arrest of Matthew Alexander Tanner, a 33-year-old white male adult of Modesto, on February 12, 2026. He was ultimately located and arrested in the City of Napa by MCU and detectives with the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

Tanner was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on the charge of murder. Tanner has a lengthy criminal history with prior arrests for carrying a loaded stolen firearm, robbery, possession of narcotics and evading law enforcement. Tanner is being held without bail.
