March 4, 2026 – Madera CHP officials offer helpful information on what to do after a vehicle collision with a power pole.

Crashing into a power pole is extremely dangerous and often deadly. These type of crashes can cause severe injuries, start fires, and leave entire neighborhoods without electricity.

If you crash into a power pole:

• Stay inside your vehicle if power lines are down. Assume all wires are live.
• Call 911 immediately.
• Warn others to stay away from the vehicle and any downed lines.
• Wait for emergency personnel.
• If you must exit due to fire, jump clear without touching the vehicle and ground at the same time, then shuffle away with small steps.

If you see a vehicle crash involving a power pole, do not approach the scene. Trying to help could put your life in danger. Call 911 immediately and keep a safe distance.

Many power pole crashes are the result of speeding, distracted driving, or like in this case impaired driving. Slow down, stay focused, and never drive under the influence.
