
Leader of the United Farm Worker's Union, Cesar E. Chavez waged a nonviolent struggle against social injustice, oppression and human suffering experienced by his people. The statue honoring him was dedicated in the Peace Garden on March 31, 1996.
March 12, 2026 - Fresno State will hold a ceremony commemorating César E. Chávez from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, March 13, at the Fresno State Peace Garden. The event will honor the life and legacy of civil rights and labor leader and celebrate his enduring impact on social justice, community organizing and educational opportunity. Chavez’ son-in-law David Villarino Gonzalez will be the keynote speaker for the event.
The event is sponsored by the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) and Latino/a Programs and Services at the Cross Cultural and Gender Center. Complimentary paletas will be provided by CAMP while supplies last.
The commemoration is free and open to the campus community, and all are encouraged to attend in remembrance of Chávez’s legacy and commitment to justice and equality.
Event Schedule
- 10 a.m. – noon — Music and resource fair featuring on- and off-campus resources.
- 11:40 a.m. — Performance by Danzantes de Aztlán.
- Noon — Program begins and keynote address by David Villarino Gonzalez.
- 12:45 p.m. — Garlanding ceremony with Dr. Sudarshan Kapoor, professor emeritus.
